Tips on Staying Safe During the Holidays

Safety is our number one goal, and we’re focused on how to prevent accidents before they happen. This commitment spans beyond the workplace, as safety becomes a state of mind wherever we go.

As families gather and travel spikes during the holidays, we encourage everyone to take basic precautions to ensure you and your loved ones are safe and injury-free throughout the season.

Here are some helpful tips on how to stay safe:

  • Car Accidents: Many travel by car during the hectic holiday season. Drivers who miss between one to two hours of the recommended seven hours of sleep in a 24-hour period nearly double their risk for a crash, according to research from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. Incidents of drinking and driving also increase over the holidays. Please get your rest, buckle up and drive defensively.
  • Slips, Trips and Falls: Toys, extension cords and decorations all contribute to a higher likelihood of slip and trip accidents. Keep walkways clear inside and outside the home. Consider night lights if out of town guests are visiting and need to get up during the night.
  • Fires and Burn Injuries: Candles and fireplaces are popular this time of year, but both significantly increase the risk of burn injuries in the home. Make sure the chimney is clear before starting a fire, and keep all flammable items – including wrapping paper and holiday décor – a safe distance from open flames. Make sure all fires are fully extinguished before going to bed or leaving the house.
  • Food Poisoning: It’s the season for indulgence, which brings an increased risk of food poisoning. Did you know food should be refrigerated within two hours of preparation and leftovers are only safe to eat for four days? You can also lower the risk of food poisoning by bringing sauces, soups and gravies to a boil when reheating.

Most important of all, treasure the time spent with loved ones this holiday season.
