Florida Capitol Switchgear Replacement Project Update

Florida Capitol Switchgear Replacement Project Update

MetroPower is performing our largest project for the State of Florida to date. Working in partnership with Childers Construction, the project involves replacing 15kV medium voltage switchgear that controls power to buildings in the state’s Capitol Complex in Tallahassee.

Our branch 1 team will replace the 40-year-old switchgear in the Florida State Capitol building, the Senate and House of Representatives buildings, the Senate garage, and the F-substation (the main feed through which power is sent to other state-owned buildings in downtown Tallahassee).

MetroPower will perform the upgrade using state-of-the-art equipment, including a new fiber loop that will allow the state to monitor the switchgear in real time from a remote location. The project will require multiple outages, each with its’ own unique challenges of logistics, manpower and narrow performance windows. It is crucial for us to meet these outage windows in order for the Capitol Complex to have power business operations.

“We are thrilled to be on board with Childers and the State of Florida to complete this upgrade at the Capitol Complex,” said Project Manager Sylvester Jones. “Being awarded such an important project is a testament to our people and the quality of our work.”

Jones and Superintendent Danny Williamson encourage their team to use their expertise to skillfully accomplish the work, exceed safety standards, and ensure client satisfaction. The switchgear replacement project began in September 2019 and is scheduled for completion in December 2021.
